In schools across Northwest Michigan, students are now into their second semester. Winter sports are winding down. And many kids are dreaming about spring break.
Yet if local schools spent as much each day as some schools downstate, this would be the week they would run out of money.
The fact is, many local schools get less than 62% of the per pupil funding of schools in other parts of the state. One district downstate - a district that gets more than $4000 more for every student than most local districts receive - this year opened a new high school, one that features a two-story media center, a grand staircase, a central courtyard, and even a large fireplace! Yet the gap in funding leaves many local schools facing tough choices about closing schools, increasing class sizes, and eliminating programs.
It's time for a state government that makes sure every Michigan student has the opportunity to receive a world-class education, regardless of where they live.
During my previous service in the State House, I worked across the aisle to close the funding gap and promote greater equity in school funding. Together with a Republican colleague, I founded and co-chaired a bipartisan school equity caucus focused on reducing the disparity in school funding. Yet more than 20 years after Proposal A was supposed to address the inequalities in school funding, disparities still remain.
Please take a minute to join our campaign and add your voice to those across the district who want a Representative who will stand up for local kids and local schools. You can "Like" our Facebook page, or visit our website to volunteer, add your name to our growing list of endorsements, and contribute.
Together, we can make sure local voices are heard in Lansing, and that our local schools get the funding they need to give our kids the education the deserve.
Thanks,
